Social Media Can, In Fact, Be a Force for Good
Darren Margolias, Executive Director of Beast Philanthropy, delivered a powerful presentation at the University of Utah during the 2024 Kindness Summit in Salt Lake City. He traced the remarkable journey of the MrBeast YouTube channel, highlighting how the organization defied predictions of industry experts who claimed that a substantial YouTube audience couldn’t be built around positivity, philanthropy, and kindness. These consultants projected a follower base of just 20-30 million at best. However, the MrBeast YouTube channel shattered those expectations, amassing an audience of 500 million plus viewers and several other successful YouTube channels.
Darren’s presentation served as a testament to the idea that social media can, in fact, be a force for good. Rather than accepting the narrative that platforms like YouTube are always a negative influence on young people, MrBeast has demonstrated that positive content can thrive, inspire, and drive meaningful change. Their success proves that kindness and generosity can captivate global audiences, offering an uplifting alternative to the often-negative discourse online.
