Kindness Starts With You

Who can your kindness touch today?
What kind act can you perform today that will make a difference in someone’s day and in the world?
Where can you be kind today?
How can you be the spark for kindness?

Kindness comes in many forms, each with the unique ability to contribute to a more compassionate world.

Kindness comes in many forms, each with the unique ability to contribute to a more compassionate world.

At its core, kindness is about considering the needs and feelings of others and acting in ways that benefit them – a unique way of spreading positivity.

Active or Intentional
Acts of Kindness

are deliberate and often planned to help others, such as volunteering at a local shelter, organizing a community cleanup, regularly donating to a charity or helping a neighbor with groceries.

These types of kindness require more effort and commitment but can lead to lasting change and deeper community connections.

Random Acts
of Kindness

are spontaneous, unplanned gestures that brighten someone’s day – paying for a stranger’s coffee, leaving a kind note for a colleague or giving an unexpected high five.

These small, unexpected actions can create a ripple effect, inspiring others to pay it forward.

Emotional Kindness

provides emotional support to a friend in need, offering words of encouragement, or simply being present for someone.

Environmental Kindness extends our compassion to the world around us, encompassing actions that protect and nurture our planet and its ecosystems.

Self Kindness

involves treating ourselves with the same compassion we offer others. This includes self-care, setting boundaries, and positive self-talk.

By being kind to ourselves, we replenish our emotional resources and build resilience, enabling us to be kinder to others.

There’s Science Behind Acts of Kindness

There’s Science Behind Acts of Kindness

Aside from the emotional and moral benefits of kindness, there are many scientific reasons to be kind. Here are some:

Oxytocin

Love Hormone

Research shows that kindness isn’t just a feel-good concept; there are tangible benefits for both the giver and the receiver.

When we perform acts of kindness, our brains release oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which helps lower blood pressure and improves overall heart health.

Kind acts also trigger the release of serotonin and dopamine, associated with happiness and satisfaction.

Cortisol

Stress Hormone

Kindness is a sort of superpower and practicing it can reduce cortisol levels (the stress hormone), increase overall life satisfaction, improve mental health, help alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression, and even boost the immune system.
Interestingly, even witnessing acts of kindness can boost our mood and inspire us to be kinder, creating a virtuous cycle within ourselves and our community. Studies have shown that people who regularly practice kindness have lower risks of chronic diseases and longer life expectancies.

Social
Perspective

Role of Kindness

From a social perspective, kindness plays a crucial role in building and maintaining strong relationships. It fosters trust, empathy, and cooperation.

While more research is needed to fully understand the long-term impacts of sustained kindness practices, the existing evidence clearly points to its power in enhancing both individual well-being and the overall well-being of society.

Last weekend, we celebrated Día de los Muertos at Rancho Market, where we came together to honor and remember loved ones who have passed, with a theme close to our hearts: Remember with Kindness. It was a wonderful day filled with laughter, colorful traditions, and fun activities with the kids!

We’re thrilled to be working with Rancho Market on their journey to becoming a certified Business of Kindness! Thank you to everyone who joined us for this special celebration. Here’s to remembering with love and kindness!

Two great friends, one Muslim, Avais Ahmed and one Jewish, Rabbi Samuel Spector. We arranged for Avais to speak at the synagogue’s Sukkot Lunch and Learn. Sukkot is all about receiving people in - friends and strangers. A great presentation by these two dear friends exemplifying that even amidst truly challenging differences, kindness, compassion, and decency can be found. These two are a magnificent example of the goodness in the world.

Last week we had an incredible interfaith panel and were reminded of this powerful truth: “There is dignity in difference. Let’s see the holiness in one another.” Through our little acts of kindness, we can help others know that we see what’s beautiful and holy in them.

Special thanks to Boyd Matheson and our panel members: Bishop Phyliss Spiegel, Bishop Oscar Solis, Sandra Lucas, Rabbi Samuel Spector, Elder Derek Miller, and Dr. Salman Masud!
